Pass Plus

PASS PLUS is a training scheme for new drivers. Its aim is to improve your driving skills and make you a safer driver. It can also lead to insurance discounts.

The scheme has been designed by the DVSA with help from the motor insurance and driver instruction industries, to develop your skills and knowledge in areas where you may have limited experience.

PASS PLUS will benefit you by:

  • Enabling you to gain quality driving experience safely
  • Helping you become a more skilful driver
  • Teaching you how to develop a positive driving style which is both enjoyable and safe
  • Reducing your risk of being involved in a road crash
  • Possible savings on your car insurance premiums

DLIW have instructors who are registered with the DVLA to provide PASS PLUS training courses and these courses are most beneficial for new drivers who have recently passed their practical driving tests.

PASS PLUS consists of a minimum of six hours training, there is no test as you will be assessed throughout the course, you must cover all the modules to complete the training.

One of the six modules to be covered on the PASS PLUS course is motorway driving and in order to gain the necessary experience the course will usually involve a days training on the mainland, you will get to drive from home on the Island onto the ferry then driving a route that will be designed to include all the modules specified in the PASS PLUS syllabus with regular breaks built-in. Utilising Sat Nav you will be taught how to plan a route, drive safely in an unfamiliar town environment, cover all aspects of driving in different weather conditions, out of town driving and rural roads, dual-carriageway driving and finally after returning on the ferry to the Island the last module covered is night driving before you return home for a well-earned rest.
